Volunteer Program and Training

WE NEED YOU   

1) Application Process:
 

Complete and submit a Volunteer Application,VolunteerRequirements2008 and signed physical form along with the following documents:

  • Any previous training certifications and/or training
  • Copy of valid NC driver’s license
  • Copy of social security card
  • Seven (7) year driving record (provided by the department)
  • Seven (7) year criminal background record (provided by the department)

Note: Upon completion of the application, it must be mailed to Morrisville Fire Department Training Division, P.O Box 166 Morrisville, N.C 27560. If delivered in person, please deliver it to Fire Station 2 at 10632 Chapel Hill Rd.   No applications will be reviewed without ALL the documentation listed above.

  • Application Review
  • Interview with Training Battalion Chief and/or Fire Chief
  • Complete physical agility course within allotted time
  • Recommendation to Fire Chief to be assigned volunteer status
  • Assigned to volunteer status and assigned a starting date
2) General Requirements:
 
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school graduate or possess a GED (exceptions will be made for current high school students when a letter of approval from the school Principal is provided).
  • Agree to random drug testing and a criminal back ground check.
  • Be of good moral character in the community.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Complete health history assessment and physical exam if needed.
3) Residency and Duty Requirements:
 
  • It is preferred that volunteer members be a residence of the fire district
  • Volunteer members NOT residing within five (5) mile from either fire station will not be issued a pager.
  • ALL volunteer members will be required to provide the department with twenty-four (24) hours of duty time per month. Time spent training at the fire department may be counted for duty time.
  • All members will be reimbursed for duty time at a rate of $7.50 per call.
4) Training Requirements
 
  • All new members shall go through the department’s minimum orientation training which is approximately twenty-four hours and can be completed during normal duty hours when possible.
  • Attend one of the first two available Wake County Essential Schools (32 hours, two weekends).
  • Attend one of the first two available Hazmat Opts Plus classes (36 hours one night and two weekends).
  • Attend one of the first three available Radiological Monitoring classes (8 hours)
  • Attend one of the first three available Wake County ICS class.  (8 hours)
  • Attend at least 2/3 of all monthly business and/or training meetings with the department (the department will meet everyThird Thursday of the month for a business meeting with a meal at 1900 hours.  In addition to that at least two night and/or Saturday training sessions will be on the calendar each month and will incorporate certification classes when possible).
  • Have completed within three years Firefighter II certification.  Within three to five years, become certified as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician.
  Continuing Education Training
 
  • After initial certifications in Hazmat, ICS, and Radiological Monitoring, you must attend at least one of the three scheduled re-certification classes per year that will be held at the department and at least one being at night or on a weekend.
  • After EMT certification you will be required to perform 24 hours per year in con-ed.
  • Failure to meet the yearly con-ed in each listed category could result in you having to attend the entire certification class again.
  Expectations and disciplinary actions:
 
  • The expectation for all department members which includes volunteers and career are the same.
  • This includes compliance with town and department SOG’s. 
  • Members will be expected to be in proper uniform when on duty.
  • Members will be expected to participate in all shift duties during duty hours.
  • Members will be emailed total duty hours monthly.  Those members not making an effort to make hours will be sent a letter by mail stating your past few months total and to also make up missing duty hours by a certain day or face termination from the department.  Members not being able to make all duty time is understandable and will be evaluated on an as needed basis.
  • Members failing to make up time after receiving a letter by mail will be released from the department and all equipment must be returned.
  • No duty time pay will by paid out to a terminated member until ALL assigned equipment is returned.
